The Films of Maya Deren with Live Accompaniment

Join us as The Flushing Remonstrance perform their original live accompaniment to the films of Maya Deren.

Maya Deren has been called the "Mother of the trance film" and was one of the most groundbreaking and influential filmmakers of our time, influencing filmmakers from Orson Welles and Ingmar Bergman to Stanley Kubrick and David Lynch. Her films are intensely personal, symbolic, and surreal, and are a truly otherwordly experience to see.

The Flushing Remonstrance will be performing live scores to Deren's "At Land" (1944), "Ensemble for Somnambulists" (1951), "Meshes of the Afternoon" (1943), "Ritual in Transfigured Time" (1946), "The Very Eye of Night" (1958), "Witch's Cradle" (1943), and Stan Brakhage's tribute to Maya Deren, "Water for Maya" (2000).

Classic Queer Cinema with Live Accompaniment

Join us as The Flushing Remonstrance perform their original live accompaniment to two of the seminal films of queer cinema.

James Sibley Watson and Melville Webber's "Lot In Sodom" (1933) is a sensual depiction of the biblical story of Sodom and Gomorrah, filled with sinewy and semi-clad bodies, delirious bacchanals devoted to physical pleasure, and a searing, cataclysmic finale depicting the fall of a city devoted to adoration of the flesh.

Charles Bryant's adaptation of Oscar Wilde's "Salomé" (1923) also visits the Bible to depict the story of Salomé (Alla Nazimova), who performs the Dance of the Seven Veils for her lustful stepfather King Herod, demanding John the Baptist’s head on a platter as a reward. Featuring stunning costumes and Aubrey Beardsley–inspired art design, and with a (rumored) exclusively gay and bisexual cast, it's considered to be one of America’s first art films.

This is another installment of the sound/light/cinema series, presented by Cinema Under the Influence.

Free admission, with donations appreciated.
