In celebration of their dual 10-year anniversaries, @BrooklynHorrorFest and The Flushing Remonstrance will present an exciting night of surrealist horror on July 9th at @nitehawkcinema in Williamsburg.

This special live score event features a rare opportunity to see Clive Barker's early experimental horror shorts THE FORBIDDEN and SALOME on the big screen. These raw first films strikingly foreshadow and establish many of the hallmarks of Barker's later work, most specifically Hellraiser. Filling out the program is Salvador Dali/Luis Buñuel's revelatory surrealist body horror classic, UN CHIEN ANDALOU.

Clive Barker has personally authorized The Flushing Remonstrance to create the first-ever score for THE FORBIDDEN, as well as their all-new score for SALOME. This is the world premiere performance for both scores.

Alla Nazimova and Charles Bryant’s adaptation of Oscar Wilde’s “Salomé” (1923) also visits the Bible to depict the story of Salomé (Nazimova), who performs the Dance of the Seven Veils for her lustful stepfather King Herod, demanding John the Baptist’s head on a platter as a reward. Featuring stunning costumes and Aubrey Beardsley–inspired art design, and with a (rumored) exclusively gay and bisexual cast, it’s considered to be one of America’s first art films.

With The Lodger, his third feature film, Alfred Hitchcock took a major step toward greatness and made what he would come to consider his true directorial debut. This haunting silent thriller tells the tale of a mysterious young man (matinee idol Ivor Novello) who takes up residence at a London boardinghouse just as a killer known as the Avenger descends upon the city, preying on blonde women. The film is animated by the palpable energy of a young stylist at play, decisively establishing the director’s formal and thematic obsessions.
